My tips on how to get up Really early

-the background(why am I doing this) about 3-4 days every school week I have to get up at 5:30 am to be able to do music practice and get to school in time for 7:45 rehearsals for a 9:00 start. Today is the first day back and wow the 5:30 really isn’t fun after getting used to going to bed at 2am and getting up at about 10 or 11 am. So these are my tips to get up , stay up and function early in the morning.

1 Get a alarm and set it: if you (like me and so many others) have a ipod get a ipod dock alarm thingy. As it is SOOOOOO  much easier to get up to your own music blaring then a stupid bleaping of a alarm. My recommendations is music that really gets you going and excited, for me that’s dubstep or happy techno. Before I used music my first reaction to hearing my alarm was to turn it off and roll over. Not so with music as I love the songs soo much I sit up and listen to the first song then get up and plug in my head phones so I can keep listening to it as I get breakfast.

2 have some one come and check on you. If you do switch off your alarm and fall asleep again ( or just accidentally fall asleep again (I have been guilty of both) then have some one who is able to check on you, just to make sure you have got up and if you have fallen asleep again to wake you up. As much as I love sleeping I still know I need to get up so its usually entirely unintentional(most of the time :D)

3 some peole talk about needing a hot cupa to get them up in the morning, others swear by energy drinks. Neither of them do any thing for me and the energy drinks just make me tired after about 20 mins. If your really struggling to get up early then go to bed earlier. There should be no need to have any drink or food as you should be able to manage without it.

4 my final tip is when you don’t have to get up early (eg weekends) then CATCH UP ON SLEEP!

If ur getting up at 5:30 on week days don’t get up if you don’t have to. Your body needs to rest so give it a chance.

The hardest part of getting up is actually getting vertical and out of bed, your not going to fall asleep at the kitchen table(don’t try it, its not comfortable or good for your back :p) once your up you will generally stay up as long as you keep moving you will be just fine.

Sherlock Holmes: a Game of Shadows

Sherlock Holmes 2 Review

The newest addition to the Sherlock Holmes Franchise—“A game of Shadows”—starring Robert Downey Jnr and Jude law manages to give new life to a set of characters and stories which have been (like so many of their subjects) ‘Done to death’ in recent years—(forgive the appalling pun).

Like its predecessor, the film is slap-sticky and over-stuffed with fight-scenes. Here again Holmes is pitted against a nefarious criminal master-mind—this time professor one professor Moriarty (an academic-cum-arms-dealer determined to bring about World War 1 before the turn of the 20th century)—in a game of wits and firepower.

For anyone looking for serious, intellectual viewing, seeing this film would be an exercise in pointlessness But for good old-fashioned fun, this film is hard to beat. Yes it’s silly—at times uprouariously so but it remains remarkably un-pretentious or self-conscious.

Both the leads  deliver strong performances. Robert Downey Jnr is hilarious as the self-centred, slightly camp, loutish Holmes with an obsession for detail and conspiracy theories, who has the irritating habit of previewing every fight scene to its conclusion in his head first. Jude Law’s Watson as the ‘straight man’ of the two (in more ways than one) alternates between enthusiastic admiration for his buddy’s antics and the sheer irritation/ despair of a man who has had his honeymoon disrupted and his new bride throne off a (very high) bridge by his best friend.

Stephen Fry, too, does a fine job as the aristocratic Mycroft—Holmes well connected brother, with an amusing predilection for nudism. Although the women of the film play very limited roles

Yes, it’s over the top, yes at times it’s stereotypical but I confess to being  unable to predict the film’s final twist. For laugh-out loud viewing, and light weight fiction Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows certainly delivers

More SH5 homecoming (+boobies)

Just a quick continuation of my SH 5 review. After finding a glitch causing a item to not appear I started again from the beginning and am now not so sure if it was a glitch or if I’m just a shit head( I may have just been stupid and not been able to find the item (but I did look up its location and checked there so ….))

I have been coming across some audio glitches where there is no, muffled or any number of other audio weirdness happening at times. I don’t think this would usually happen but is a result of a kinda shit copy ( you get what you payed for (especially when its free))

I have noticed some interesting things: there is no sense of urgency. In other games you are very directed, so at all times have objectives which you are directed to so you all ways know what you should be doing. Not so much in SH 5. You often are left to your own devices to explore and find your own way. This isn’t a bad thing but I find a sense of urgency adds to the game and helps with horror aspects.

The combat ( this may be another time where I’m just a shit head ) I quite like the combat, its smooth and very well done, but if you stuff up (which I do) and a monster gets into a combo it is very difficult to escape and you very quickly take a lot of damage, this can be quite frustrating, its probably just me sucking but hey.

Another thing I have noticed is my play style. In horror games I generally try to kill all enemy’s before I stop, look around and progress, collecting any items and such. This play style fits well in a game like dead space where the enemy’s are fast and specifically target you. This play style doesn’t work as well in SH5 as the monsters are slow and can be easily run around allowing you to conserve your ammo and health. I have been seeking out each enemy and killing them which has left me severely depleted in health and ammo. Tip: if it can be avoided then avoid it( duhh)

I am still really impressed by the graphics(look back at the boobies above and you will agree(hi def boobies :D ))  this Thursday another Res evil movie is on so I will give a review on that, also on the topic of reviews Nsharp8 has finished her reviews and will hopefully be giving them to me 2moro (or 2day as it is now 12:10 am) I also have some other people who may be writing reviews for me and I will give you more info if I have any guaranteed reviews coming.

Resident evil apocalypse

I stumbled across this movie while I was channel surfing so I missed the start, I actually have no idea how far in I was in so I can't give a perfect review but I can give it a go. From what I worked out the story starts with a infection caused by the umbrella corporation that have released the T Virus ( I think) causing a zombie out break

The main characters are(in order on the pic above) Alice (x3) who had been being tested on in the umbrella labs, Jill valentine, i cant remember the name of the next guy but he is cool. a reporter, a gangster sort of person and a one of Jill’s friends. When racoon city is put into quarantine and a nuclear strike ordered it’s a race to get out. On the way they are contacted by  a scientist

who’s daughter is still trapped in the city, if they rescue her he will get them out. Lots of gunfire , and epicenes follow which includes the hero’s fighting the great beast called Nemesis( who is really bad ass :P ) kill lots of zombies and generally give umbrella a big headache.

I wont put in any plot spoilers  (even tho the movie is old) I quite enjoyed, its fun, epic and has tones of zombies. What’s not to love. I don’t think it’s a amazing film but its certainly very watchable and I enjoyed it quite a bit

if your looking for horror then i dont think this is the movie for you as it isnt really that scarry, but its still a very good actoin thriller type movie. If you have the chance to watch it i would take it.

Silent hill homecoming ( + some waffling )

Silent Hill 5 Homecoming.

I may ramble on or go into way to much detail

I picked this game up yesterday to give me something to compare SH3 to the newest game in the series and let me say I’m impressed

The story is intriguing, I am not that far in but I want to know more. I already know what happens as I have watched a walkthrough, but I still really want to experience it my self as its always more scary when you experience it.

The graphics are very impressive, some good screen shots remind me of high quality black ops shots. It looks great and play’s smoothly, the main character Alex at times can be mistaken for a real person the graphics are that good. Unfortunately I can't find any options in the main menu to change the quality and resolution. The only bugs I have is the map and the child’s drawings are really low def. I think it might just be my game as other play throughs I have seen do not have that problem. Its minor but it annoying as I can't see the words written on it or make out what the drawing is meant to be. On the other side I was very impressed at the model quality

It detail even goes to the point that when you pick up a item you can examine the item up close and rotate it. You can read serial numbers on items and first aid kits have specs of blood on them. this amount of detail is just extraordinary. The detail reminds me of the extreme detail in Amnesia the dark decent.

The game play is very fluid, I am most impressed with the gameplay. Every thing runs soo smoothly I have lots of praise for the gameplay. You have two stances: passive and aggressive( or what ever u want to call them.) in the passive stance you have your weapon by your side and can run around enemy’s but in the combat stance you have your weapon at the ready and lock on to the nearest enemy ready for you to unleash either a strong or weak attack. Weak attacks are quick, deal less damage(duhh) and can be chained together, strong attacks can be charged and can stun.

Using different combination against different enemy’s with the right weapon to begin a very quick brutal finishing move, for ferals(the monster dog things) the combo when holding the lead pipe results in a vicious animation of u shoving a pipe through the dogs head.

Wow …. I have gone into WAY too much detail….. wow…. Uhh

… um and I have sooo much more to say. I just have soo much fun writing these.

To stop you having to read a entire book on SH I will save the rest for the next post but….

Silent hill 3 first impressoins and more

The first thing that struck me when I started up Sh3 was that there was absolutely no tutorial, I know this isn’t unheard of but I’m used to games that give you just the basics: WASD to move and how to attack. It was fairly standard but it’s still a little confusing.

The second thing that struck me was the camera angles and fixed camera. About 90% of my games on steam are first person games and 9 of the other 10 are third person with only about one some thing else. This is why the camera of sh3 confused me. For those of you who don’t know the camera is a loose 3^rd person camera with a fixed position camera at other times. It will follow your movements but if you turn around it will stay at the rotation it is unless you manually adjust it (just press tab and move the mouse ). This took me a bit of time to work out and found it made combat difficult and kindda down right annoying. The fixed camera is as if the camera is (fixed) locked in a position and doesn’t move, I also found this quite confusing

I guess im just too used to more modern games but the combat of sh3 really felt weird. After playing lots of games where combat is meant to occur and is easy to do to the combat of sh3. Due to the camera and the lack of a health bar on screen it was difficult to know how low health I was with out moving to my inventory.

From the videos of game play I have seen people generally try to avoid combat unless they have to, I generally try to seek out my enemy’s and kill them as knowing they are dead makes me feel a lot safer.

I guess the most important thing about the silent hill games is the story so I might restart on easy just so I can experience the story with out the frustration of the gameplay. Even though I have been quite critical I still am defiantly going to keep playing.  Originaly I picked up the Silent hill franchise as I I realised that as a survival horror fan I hadn’t ventured into one of the biggest survival horror franchises out there.

More SH stuff coming soon as I am also installing SH5 right now, from the vids I have seen it looks closer to the games im used to then SH3.

After the amount of interest my first steampunk post generated I decided to have a bit more of a look for what is actually out there.

Dead Frontier

I stumbled across this in browser  zombie MMO RPG i think via a face book add, and am pleasantly surprised( considering face book adds are shit!)
You start off by selecting your characters looks, gender and profession, each profession has advantages and disadvantages. The athlete has greater stamina so can run for longer, the soldier has higher weapons skills and starts with a SMG, the fireman have a high immunity to fire and starts with a axe. stuff like that. I chose a police man which gave me higher shot gun skills and pistol training and meant i started with a shotgun.
Once you finish your character creation you start in the outpost. Which is a screen from were you can deposit money, get new equipment and  other such things. You can also head out into the city were the real fun starts.
When you head out into the city the game play is similar to some thing like dead nation or alien swarm. A basic top down shooter.

 In game if you want to open your map( you also have a mini map in the corner of your screen)  or inventory rather then just making you invaulrable or letting the zombies kill you as you stand there you have 10 seconds between you pressing the open button and it actually opening so you can’t just use it if your being mobbed by zombies. Once its open tho your character is set to AFK and is invaulrable while the menu is open.
There are many different types of zombies in the game ( most I haven’t met yet ) but the one I had trouble with was a flaming zombie. As I am a very low level at the moment( and maybe because I only played it yesterday) I don’t yet have the money to buy any guns that can take it down. Basically it is a fast zombie that is on fire, supposedly for some reason the fire causes the virus to repair damaged cells ( according 2 the wikia) so with my limited ammo and crappy guns I generally try to avoid places with it.

Portal 2 DLC on the way!

Steam/Portal 2 has updated to show us some excellent news, New support for upcoming updates in September... meaning that most likely there will be DLC and really soon!

As they went as far as making a whole update for supporting the DLC, could we see something completely new? I was expecting more map packs for co-op and advanced for single, but maybe its gonna be something completely new, who knows, i think i will love it anyway :)

Ain't That a Kick in the Head

Due to reasons i cannot mention, my steam has been reset, my whole computer was almost, but i managed to minimize the damage to steam

This means I've just lost all 200GB of my games

But i have all 400GB backed up on my external harddrive (phew)

So as sadly as it seems, i wont be playing any game any time soon, i have to reinstall all my games from my harddrive, (better than downloading them again i guess), but i am still extremely pissed....

Well, I'll let you know when I've at least got my favorites reinstalled, but apart from that, all my games are... gone...

Dead space 2: reminiscing

Sigh

i recently got back into dead space 2 and almost jumped for joy when i found my self standing once again on the old deck where you first enter the USG Ishimura.

as i walked through the familiar once blood soaked halls which were now clean and covered with patching plastic i found it really chilling even though nothing has jumped out at me yet i am still quite nervous just remembering the events that occurred there all those many years ago.

After reading the current article, Which is mainly about retails vs digital stores, and how retail hate steam for beating them in pc sales yet all this time that gamestop and other retails have abused pc gaming badley. THe result is sad, such as the removal of awesome A+ pc games from their stores, such as Deus-ex human revolution.
